Holding / Pot Magnets

Bunting offers a wide variety of Pot Magnets ranging from small ones which can lift 400g to much larger ones that can lift to 130kg, available in several different diameters and heights.

In fact, we are only able to list here just a portion of what we actually stock – with far more sizes and pull forces available and in stock. If you can’t find the pot magnet you are looking for here, please call us and we can either go through the various options with you or send you our complete range via our brochure.

Types of Pot/ Holding Magnets

There are 7 types of pot magnets available at Bunting in addition to a surface protecting slide resist clamp magnet:

  • Pot Magnet – Features external threaded stud/boss mounting
  • Pot Magnet – Features internally threaded mounting (deep pot)
  • Pot Magnet – Features countersunk mounting (shallow pot)
  • Pot Magnet – Features internal threaded stud/boss mounting
  • Pot Magnet – Features through-hole mounting
  • Pot Magnet – Features threaded through-hole mounting
  • Limpet Pot Magnet
  • Surface protecting slide resist clamp magnet

Our pot magnets are available in a range of different finishes including, white paint, red paint, silver (chrome, zinc and nickel), ferritic stainless steel and a black rubber-coated finish.

These pot magnets are extremely versatile when it comes to the various applications they can be used for. Whether it’s extremely cold (in theory towards absolute zero) or extremely hot (up to +300 degrees C or even as high as +350 degrees C), the magnets perform well.

Where moisture content is very low, all of the various types of pot magnets can be used effectively for ambient temperature applications that are indoors. For maximum pull strength with a small size, then NdFeB pot magnets are most suitable. In environments featuring low cost and higher temperature applications, Ferrite pot magnets are well suited and can also be used for corrosion resistance applications. If you have a situation where the pull force needs to change as little as possible when the temperature varies, especially in higher temperature applications, then Alnico pot magnets work well. These particular pot magnets (Alnico) are also effective in corrosion resistance applications. SmCo Pot magnets are another magnet suited to marine and corrosion resistance applications and can also be used in situations where temperatures are extreme.

Rubber coated magnets are also available and these can help to minimise slipping across the clamped surface by providing extra friction. It works as an effective air gap is introduced between magnet and surface, resulting in a reduced pull force. The rubber coating means pot magnets can be clamped more securely to vertical surfaces with less slippage. Without this coating, you would require a far stronger magnet – for a slip or shear to happen with a pot magnet a force of about 20% the maximum pull is needed. This is only an approximation and any friction levels present will certainly influence these figures.

It’s also worth noting that pull values are based on the pot magnets working at the highest magnetic specification and clamping onto a far larger, high magnetic permeability mild steel base. The force indicated is the one that is needed to ensure that the pot magnet can be removed every time. A reduced clamping force could occur when clamping onto a thin sheet as the thin ferromagnetic surface saturates magnetically. Pull force is also reduced when needing to clamp through an ‘effective air gap’. Another thing that can affect the pull force is the magnet temperature characteristics – temperatures above ambient levels will reduce pull forces while the level of reduction will depend largely on the make-up of the pot magnet.

Bunting has designed and manufactured a range of pot magnets that are ideal for marine-based applications and also applications when temperatures are right at the extremes for magnets. Combining SmCo and ferromagnetic stainless steel that is corrosion-resistant, we have been able to deliver a strong pot magnet with a pull force that remains stable across a wide range of temperatures as well as more effective corrosion resistance. Therefore, these particular pot magnets are an ideal choice for applications that need to operate in extreme environments.

With a polyurethane coating to protect the relevant surface – the Surface Protecting Slide Resist Clamp Magnet also provides a superior shear force which helps it to resist slipping along the surface in question. This particular magnet is suited to a wide range of applications, including the following: signs & banners, ceiling clamps, displays for marketing and exhibitions, industrial fixings, lighting fixtures, false ceiling clamps, jigs, torque limited seals, window dressings, point of sale and marine-based applications.

We can also provide a made to measure service for pot magnets if you have specific requirements to adhere to. Please feel free to contact us if this service is of interest. Please Note – In most cases, a minimum order requirement applies to this service.
