‘Brutal’ 10nTaff Challenge Completed

By Paul Fears | 06 July 2022

“It was brutal,” said Paul Fears, our Press Officer, after completing the 10nTaff challenge for Tŷ Hafan, a children’s hospice in South Wales.  Over 55 hours, Paul climbed the five highest mountains in North Wales, the five highest mountains in South Wales, and then cycled over 53 miles off-road from Brecon to Cardiff.

“The challenge was far harder than I ever comprehended,” Paul explained.  “On day 1, we started walking the first mountain at 7:30am and completed the final mountain at 1:20am the next morning.  It was a tough day and yet we still had a long overnight drive down through Wales ahead followed by five more mountains and a cycle ride.  This was both a mental and physical challenge.”

The challenge was organised by a group of Dads and Uncles whose families have been and are being supported by the charity Tŷ Hafan.  Tŷ Hafan provides specialist support for families who have children with life-limiting illnesses.  The 10nTaff team included Dads whose children are presently using the service as well as those whose children are too old to still use the service or who have sadly passed away.  Paul’s eldest son, Greg, was cared for the charity until he was 19-years-old and through outreach projects, Tŷ Hafan continues to support Paul’s family.

Over the three-day challenge, and in just over 55 hours, the team walked 38.8 miles, took 102,000 steps, and climbed 12,540 feet in 25 hours and 27 minutes, and cycled 53 miles, climbing 2,890 feet in 7 hours 17 minutes.

“The pain that we experienced when walking and cycling was nothing compared to the daily challenges faced by many children and families,” said Paul.  “The 10nTaff challenge is our [the Dad’s] way thanking the hospice for caring for our families and children.  Also, with the incredible support of companies including Bunting, Convey Law and Viridor, as well as hundreds of sponsors, we have been able to raise a fantastic amount of money for the charity.  We wish to thank everyone!”
