Magnets Attract Crowds at Cenex LCV

High Interest In The Latest Magnet Technology

A significant increase in visitors to the Bunting Magnetics stand at Cenex-LCV 2018 [compared with 2017] reflected the high level of interest in new magnet technology.  In addition, the growing importance of low carbon vehicles was highlighted with a record number of attendees and exhibitors at the show.

By 2021, phased in from 2020, the fleet average emissions in the European Union for all new cars will be 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer.  This equates to a fuel consumption of 4.1 litres/100 km for petrol engines and 3.6 litres/100 km for diesels.  Earlier this year, it was reported [The Guardian] that CO2 emission from the average new car sold rose for the first time since 2000, reaching an average of 121.0 grams per CO2 per kilometer (the same as in 2015).

The Slow Move To Electric Vehicles

Sales of electric cars continue to disappoint, with many drivers reluctant to purchase due to the limited range before charging is required.  However, there are major changes happening in the industry and even luxury car producers such as Aston Martin (RapidE) and Jaguar (I-Pace) released or under development.

The key to the success of the electric car is the efficiency of energy conversion, with enhanced battery life and improved motor performance.

The Importance of Magnets in Electric Cars

The necessity of improving motor performance was one of the primary reasons for Bunting’s attendance at the event.  Bunting continues to develop new Neodymium Rare Earth Magnet technology that enables magnets to operate at higher temperatures for longer periods of time.

Many of the discussions on the Bunting stand focused on the new Grain Boundary Diffused Neodymium Magnets, with over half our visitors requesting further information after the show.  These new Magnets offer higher performance from the same space envelope and allow designers to consider solid magnets rather than laminated magnets as a more cost effective solution for the first time in a decade.

Visitors to the stand also showed a great deal of interest in bespoke magnetising systems that can post assembly magnetise rotors with embedded magnets, and surface mounted multipole or Halbach arrays.  Meetings have already been confirmed for two magnetiser projects.

“Cenex-LCV 18 has been an excellent event,” explained Matthew Swallow, one of Bunting’s Magnet Experts.  “We were able to discuss projects in detail and explain that we offer UK-based technical support and manufacturing expertise.”
