New Crane Installed for Magnetic Separator Manufacture

By Paul Fears | 27 February 2019

Magnetic assembly plant in Berkhamsted, Bunting Europe has purchased and installed a new crane.  The new crane enables the safe and easy handling of the large and heavy magnetic rotors built for the highly successful Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator.

Investing in Manufacturing with a New Crane

The installation of the new crane is part of a continued investment programme at Bunting’s Berkhamsted and Redditch manufacturing facilities.  Recently, Bunting announced the opening 0f a new recycling test facility at the Master Magnets plant in Redditch, housing two models of Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator and an Eddy Current Separator.

The Crane was supplied by AG Cranes from Sambourne near Redditch in Worcestershire, UK.  The crane has a maximum lift capacity of 1000 kg, well within the maximum expected lift required for a 2 metre wide Stainless Steel Separator magnetic rotor.

The Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator

The patented design of the magnetic rotor enables the attraction and separation of fragmented stainless steel.  The high intensity magnetic field is produced by thick blocks of Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets mounted on a steel carrier.  Skilled fabricators assemble the strong magnetic rotor.  Great care is needed due to the high magnetic field and the new crane has simplified the handling process.

The new crane reduces handling time, improving manufacturing productivity.  This is important with an ever-increasing demand.  Three Stainless Steel Magnetic Separators were ordered in January 2019.

“At Berkhamsted, we have an experienced team who specialise in building complex magnet assemblies” explained Simon Ayling, Bunting’s Managing Director.  “Our assessment of the manufacturing process for the rotors of the Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator highlighted the necessity for easier and safer handling.  We took advice from the AG Cranes team to select the best crane for our needs.  The installation went very smoothly and was perfectly timed with three orders for the Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator being secured in January.”
